Magnus August Hølberg aka Cashmere Cat, may be the quiet achiever of the emerging Norwegian electronic music scene, although that is quickly changing. Whilst Kygo may have grabbed many of the headlines, playing the main stage of last years Tomorrowland and being asked to remix for artists such as Coldplay, Cashy (as he is affectionately known) has been busy assembling a musical résumé that would be the envy of any seasoned producer.
From humble beginnings
Born in the small Norwegian town of Halden, which he describes as a “weird little Norwegian town where we get each trend five years late,” Cashmere Cat is now the one setting the trends five years in the future. A turntablist by trade (he represented Norway in the DMC World DJ Championships from 2006-2009 as DJ FINAL), the now Manhattan-based Norwegian has shown he is as adept in the studio as he is behind the turntables. Despite attending music school, he says he never paid attention in class, instead preferring to make weird sounds at home.
Since releasing his debut EP “Mirror Maru” in 2012, Cashy has used those “weird sounds” to produce tracks for artists such as Arianna Grande, Ludacris, Charli XCX and Juicy J. “I’ll work with anyone,” he says to factmag.com, “as long as it’s a cute song. I’m trying not to be close-minded with my music at all.” His all-embracing approach seems to be working, catching the attention of none other than Kanye West, for whom he co-produced his latest single “Wolves”.

Feet on the ground, head in the clouds
Despite his success, Cashy seems to have his feet firmly planted on the ground:

Notoriously camera shy, it is becoming harder and harder for Cashy to remain anonymous. “Most people still think I’m a girl,” he says, “which is kind of cute.” Not too long ago his instagram account was full of selfies of girls he knew, not photos of himself. Even now, it is more common to find photographs of him with his hair or hands covering his face.
Cashmere Cat plays at Vulkan Arena in Oslo on 24 April. Check out his newest slice of purrfectness, “Ice Rink”, below.

PS. Did you know Cashy loves emojis? His favourites are the cat-emoji and hearts, which make frequent appearances in his tweets and on his instagram account ♥♥♥.
