Hey y’all.
Long time, no e-mails. Well, I’ve been touring. [selfpromoting start] check pictures and tourdiary at www.myspace.com/ballemalurt [/selfpromoting ends]
For those of you not in-the-know, 2 times a year we take a break and pre-record 3 special-shows (aka re-runs) where we summarize the last 6 months in records, shows and other happenings. This is the best of 2010 in punkrock, garagerock and hardcore, according to Aggresso! at least. You will notice that I didnt include website-links this time around. I guess you’re all clever and grown up now and can use scroogle or other search-engines. You will find most of the artists as friends on our Shit-space.
Also, some sections dont have comments under them. Like last time, Maiken has failed to deliver her share of the work-load so my apologies to those who miss it but Im not her boss. If you find any typing-errors or other mistakes, you can keep them. The selections in italic-writing are only featured on the online reruns. This is because of lack of time to include everything we wanted. Runners-up at the bottom.
News on Aggresso! punkrock radio below the comment-section. Here’s the playlists:

RELEASES:
BAD RELIGION – 30 YEARS LIVE (download)
Even though they started 31, not 30, years ago, have released their fare share of crappy albums and whatever you’re feelings towards this giant punkrock-monster called Bad Religion is, you have to give them credit for sticking to it for 31 years. That’s almost as old as I am. Includes bonafied classics such as “We’re Only Gonna Die”, “Fuck Armageddon, This Is Hell!”, “Marked”, “A Walk” and “Flat Earth Society” as well as new songs such as “Los Angeles is Burning”, “New Maps of Hell” and an electric version of “Wont Somebody” as well as a brand new song, “The Resist Stance” (oh, clever!) Anyways, you cant go wrong with this.
Featured track: AMERICAN JESUS (LIVE)
DROPKICK MURPHY’S – LIVE ON LANDSDOWNE, BOSTON, MA (Cooking Vinyl/Tuba)
Just as Bad Religion, you have to give these guys credit for sticking to it for such a long time. Their 2nd live-album is even better than the last one (and I had my doubts when I got this), much thanks to the magnificent songs from “The Meanest of Times”. From the opening with the school-bell going off on top of the crowd-noise, through hit after hit from their 4 latest albums (hell, even the songs from “The Warrior Code” sound great) to the ending with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones singing along to “I’m Shipping Up To Boston”, this record puts a big smile on my face and makes me wish a hadnt been so drunk the last time I saw them live. Maybe I should watch the DVD that accompanies it.
Featured track: FAMOUS FOR NOTHING (LIVE)
FLOGGING MOLLY – LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE (SideOneDummy/Tuba)
Both Dropkick and Flogging have live CDs + DVDs out almost at the same time? And they’re both recorded on the same days? Could it be a coincidence? I have to keep a hand on the Dropkick-CD but “Live at the Greek Theatre” is by no means a bad livealbum. If you like Flogging, you’ll love this! I only wish I hadnt been so drunk the last time I saw them live. Maybe I should watch the DVD that accompanies it.
Featured track: WHATS LEFT OF THE FLAG (LIVE)
THE GOO MEN – THREE TUMBS UP (No Fucking Hippies)
Featured track: SCREAM MY NAME
KNUSTE RUTER – GJENNOM VEGGENE (Fysisk Format)
Featured track: BORDERS
McRACKINS – IT AIN’T OVER EASY (Wolverine)
I gotta say that Wolverine Records is hands down the finest label that have sent us records the last years. No offense to all you other beatiful partners out there but almost EVERY ONE is a hit in either Maikens book or mine. Or boths. McRackins is a well-hidden secret in the pop-punk genre, for my sake at least, but I instantly fell in love with them. Every song is catchy in its own way, topped with an unmistakably signature-vocal. Clever lyrics with both humor and wit. And they have masks and costumes as well!
Featured track: IT AIN’T OVER EASY
NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS – GET PISSED OR DIE TRYIN’ (split w/Dik Guru) (Dirty Old Man/Punker Pages/Winston)
Rich Lard McCormack, formerly of Dogshit Sandiwch and Punk Shit Records, was gracious enough to send us ALL of his new labels releases. I have to be honest and say not everyone did it for me. But those who did really came through on me. NOYFBs “side” of this split is just complete and utter brilliant. I seriously doubt this band is as good live as on record coz this record is just too fantastic. The production really does it. And not only are the lyrics clever and funny but the lead singer, who cant really sing, actually pulls it off and puts a smile on my face. They do at least 2 covers but all the songs could’ve been trad.arr, thats how catchy this is. I guess they had loadsa fun in the studio, pouring pint after pint down eachothers throats, cracking jokes about the respective members parents sexual-life and whatnot. Please make the next release as brilliant as this? Thank you. Oh, its punk by the way.
Featured track: MY MOMS TITS ARE BIGGER THAN YOURS
PIPES & PINTS – UNTILL WE DIE (Unrepentant/Wolverine)
Featured track: CITY BY THE SEA
RAMÖUNS – ROCKAWAY BEACH BOYS (Wolverine)
Imagine if the Ramones had done only Beach Boys-covers. This is what you’d get. Apparently it is an well-hidden secret recording from the BDR/DDR-times. Wether you believe it or not, this is pretty fantastic even though Maiken liked it better than me.
Featured track: SURFIN’ USA
RUNNIN’ RIOT – BOOTS & BALLADS (Dirty Old Man/Record Rebellion)
Featured track: THE ESTATE
SCARRED SOCIETY – 2-TRACK CD-R
Do you like Burnt Cross? Then you’ll love this. Drum-machine, machine gun-guitar, political, angry, in-your-face lyrics. Only 2 tracks? Nooo! More! NOW!
Featured track: CORPCORE
SIR REG – SIR REG (Anarkopunx)
Paddy-punk at neckbreak speed. Irishmen living in Sweden, apparently supporting The Misfits in Norway this fall for some strange reason. Good on ‘em.
Featured track: DRINK UP YA SINNERS
SJÖLSTYRT LIV FANZINE # 6
Norways longest-living fanzine. Politics, punkrock, feminism, straightedgism and whatnot. Yet another quality-product from the highly entertainable Ane Vegane who now resides in Umeå, Sweden.
Featured track: Interview Ane Vegane PART 1
SOCIAL SUICIDE – 5TH MAN ON A DEAD MANS GRAVE (Brilliance)
These guys are really making a name for themselves. Fabolous liveband too. Check out their new single allready! Its hardcore. Also played some blistering gigs in Bergen this year, one of them a benefit for Timo/Alerta Antifascista
Featured track: 5TH MAN ON A DEAD MANS GRAVE
STRAWBERRY BLONDES – FIGHT BACK (Not on Your Radio/Wolverine)
Featured track: MANNERS AND RESPECT
TEMPO & THE TERRORTWINS – 4 TRACK DEMO
Instrumental surf-band from Norway? Hell yeah! Apart from the obvious cover of the Sonics and Misfits, this demo is really original and brightens up my day big time. More please!
Featured track: HOLLYWOOD BABYLON
VARIOUS: BRANSJEVELTER 3 (Fysisk Format)
Norways hottest and most important label the last year released this in connection with the By:Larm-festival in February. Loadsa great hardcore-acts in here, some with releases on the label and some not. Cant wait for the next!
Featured track: LIVSTID – GROVDRIFT (originally from the SPLIT 7″ w/ HUMAN WASTE)
VARIOUS – HEY PUNK! DIY VOL.1 (Hey Punk!)
A brilliant compilation straight up my alley. A wonderful mix between several subgenres within punk and hardcore and great bands that play them. Mostly Swedish bands I believe, maybe becoz this label is based in Umeå.
Featured track: WEREWOLF SYNDROME – RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
VARIOUS ARTISTS – package from Beat Butchers
The very nice people from Beat Butchers sent us a package with a ghandful of their releases from the last few years. This one from 2006 really caught my eye (or should I say ear) as they got some original stuff going on here.
Featured track: VARNAGEL – JAG VIL INTE VARA ETT KÖN (from “Stenar mot Pansarvagner)
VARIOUS: PUNK CHARTBUSTERS VOL. 6 (Wolverine)
You cant really go wrong with 40 bands turning classic pop- and rock-songs (mostly) into punk- and ska-versions. Ive had so much fun times with this double CD and you should too. Support this great label allready!
Featured tracks: GREEN FROG FEET – UP WHERE WE BELONG and NO TALENT NECESSARY – LOOKING FOR FREEDOM
VARIOUS ARTISTS – SAINTS N SINNERS (Soul Food/Wolverine)
This! This compilation sums up a bunch of releases from a fantastic label. Wolverine focuses on punkrock, rockabilly and swing (!), mostly wrapped in a classic horror-package. Every single track here is a winner and everytime I thought it couldnt get any better it did. Get this!
Featured track: PINKSPOTS UNT DER HUT KLUB – EIN WUNDERSCHÖNER TAG
VARIOUS: SIMPLY SHIT (THE BEST OF PUNK SHIT RECORDS) (Dirty Old Man)
A compilation from one of the first labels Aggresso! ever worked with. Of course its good! Blisterhead, Tower Blocks, Dogshit Sandwich, Eastfield, The Steam Pig, 4 Past Midnight, D’ Corner Bois and so on. If you like your punk mostly British and raw you’ll be a fool not to get this.
Featured track: D’CORNER BOIS – TRENDY PUNK
SHOWS:
BACK TO BEAT-WEEKENDER @ Jacobs, 01-03.04
Its pretty hard to put up gigs in Bergen when you’re not working AT the venue. Trond and Jon from Back to Beat have managed to create a very vital and living scene for the garagerock-fantasts here on the west-coast. The Back to Beat Weekender-festival this easter was a manifestation of that. 3 days with local, national and international bands in a pub that normally doesnt do gigs was an immidiate success. Kudos, thumbs up and all that!
Featured track: DAVID PETER & THE WYLDE SECT – ON THE STREET (from “The Tornado Sessions” 7″, Wilde Beat)
BLOOD COMMAND @ Danmarksplass Sat 01.05 and Garage Fri 14.05
Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last year or so, you’ve heard about Blood Command. Huge in Norway, getting the buzz internationally. Their debut-fullength didnt make it to this list coz it contained too much previously released songs but the 2 abovementioned gigs was absolutely electric. The living-room at Danmarksplass was packed when they took the floor on the International Workers Day.Normally, 50-60 people show up and the room is full. This night almost 100 people where there. Insane! And their releseparty featured a moshpit consistent of 90% girls. In dresses. Top that if you can! After their European-tour and a gazillion gigs in Norway, they’re finally starting to look like a no.1 liveband as well. Now what?
Featured track: GHOSTCLOCKS (from “Ghost Clocks”, Fysisk Format)
THE CYNICS @ Garage Wed 26.05
Although this was Maikens choice, I can honestly say that the mood was excellent and Garage was almost full on a freakin Wednesday. Gotta love it. Local support Team Blitzkrieg was on fire this evening as well and The Cynics rocked hard as always. More kudos to Back to Beat who co-arranged this show.
Featured track: interview THE CYNICS
DEE RANGERS, THEE RABBENS, SCAMPI, CHIPS, DIP & CAMPARI @ Garage Sat 30.01.
Featured track: SCAMPI, CHIPS, DIP & CAMPARI – RUM & COKE (unmastered recording from upcoming EP)
DI KJIPE @ Danmarksplass, New Years Eve
So, where to start? After only a year or so being active, the punkband Di Kjipe exploded into the Norwegian punk- and music-scene last year. They got the buzz from the mainstream and the credibility from the underground. Only Beinkjör and Tarmer from Bergen can say the same. The New Years Eve show was their last public one before disbanding and consequently cancelling their scheduled By:Larm-performances in February. And their record hadnt even been released! Then their was the infamous incident with too much speed and a knife (bad combo) which led to the guitarist trying to stab the leadsinger, something that was well-known in the circle of people around the members but not in the media – untill the label decided to use it in the press-release. Then all hell broke loose. Apparently, everythings cool now and their album is out both digitally and on vinyl. One for the history-books indeed.
Featured track: DI KJIPE – ROTTERACE (from “Kor E Du No”, Fysisk Format)
GOD IS DEAD BUT HERE’S THEE LONGJOHNS WITH THEIR GUIDE THROUGH THIS TOXIC JUNGLE
@ Victoria Dec, @ Garage Sat 06.02, @ Back to Beat Weekender, Jacobs 02. 04
Thee Longjohns (for short) played numerous gigs the last 6 months and proved to be one of Bergens most exciting new bands in the punkscene, even though they play rockabilly. There are rumors of a bassplayer with an injured arm and a pregant girlfriend but no-one in Bergen has any doubts as to wether they’ll be back on stage or not. Their performance live on the radio was quite entertaining as well.
Featured track: COLDBLOODED GIMP (live on Aggresso!)
HÅL IN THE SKO-FESTIVAL @ Inside Fri 28/29.05
Atleast 3 times a year, Jon & Knut from the punkband Beinkjør assembles their friends and friends’ friends’ bands to create Bergens only finacially succesfull punkrock-based festival the last 10 years (at least!). The name (“Hole in the Shoe”) is a parody on the famous metal-festival Hole in the Sky and like every time before, this one was well-attended and gave us both some new bands to discover and some familiar ones to rock out to. Rumor has it that this falls HITS will be the last. Too bad coz this is as good as punkrock-Bergen gets!
Featured tracks: interview Knut Lysne, Hål in the Sko-festival and HINDENBÜRG ROCK N GRILL – KICK (unreleased)
IMMATURUS’ ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW @ Kvarteret, april 2010. Extra shows June 2010
With Maria from local horror-rockers Roadkill as Eddie
Featured track: MEAT LOAF – HOT PATOOTIE (from the soundtrack, Rhino)
LE FLAN DE SANG @ Inside fri 22.01
Perhaps a little bit on the side of our usual musical field (metal/grunge/something-core with a cello and synth) but what an amazing liveband! And the energy is total punkrock as well. The interview was nominated for the best of its kind in 2010 so far and was quite funny and entertaining, if I may say so myself. Cant wait untill the cello-player is done with her mummy-leave and they start playing live again. Yeah!
Featured track: interview Tom & Rune, Le Flan de Sang
THE LEN PRICE 3 @ Inside Sat. 10.04
Featured track: Nothing Like You (from “Priceless”, Wicked Cool)
LIVSTID, MØRK KAPITTEL & BLOOD COMMAND @ Danmarksplass Sat 01.05.
When the going gets tough, the punks get tougher. When Timo, Germanys no.1 DIY-uncle and all-around good guy, got screwed by the American band GG Elvis last year, the call to action was international. Spread over 2 nights, 5 local bands and 1 from out of town stepped up to the benefit-plate in Bergen, playing a living-room just outside of the city. The first was in April with Social Suicide, Poets on Payday and Stumbleboy and was nice all over but May 1st with the above-mentioned bands took the cake. 100 people was crammed into the room which normally fits a 50+ capacity. The shops were closed so 20 cases of beer were sold/consumed. Thats a lot of money for Timo. National radio-show Lydverket, who originally was attending the very commercial Bergenfest, was even there. One hell of a night!
Featured tracks: LIVSTID – GROVDRIFT (from the SPLIT 7″ w/ HUMAN WASTE and the Bransjevelter 3-comp., Fysisk Format) and BLOOD COMMAND – GHOST CLOCKS (from “Ghost Clocks”, Fysisk Format)
MARK “BBQ” SULTAN @ Inside Fri 19.03.
After the infamous performance together with King Khan at the same place last year where BBQ left the stage mid-way through the set, full of fever and anger towards everyone and everything, he was now back to make up for it. Atleast thats what the promotor said. Turned out, he wasnt so sorry, as our interview with him goes to show, and again he seemed kinda angry and bitter on stage. But he delivered a killer show armed with just drums and guitar. Anyways, this was really Maikens selection, I just felt like writing some stuff here.
Featured track: interview Mark BBQ Sultan part 1
MASSHYSTERI @ Inside Fri 09.04
I could not beleive my eyes. Bergens metal-pub no.1 Inside had gone and booked one of the most popular bands in the underground the last year, Masshysteri from Umeå, Sweden. How the hell did their radar pick up this? Turns out they didnt. It was an outside job. Nevertheless, a well-attended and well-played show. They could’ve played for hours more and still not loose any edge. And I almost got them to play at my house the next day. Oh well.
Featured track: interview MASSHYSTERI
OTHER STUFF:
Siri Rockmeiers Master’s Thesis “Not Just Boys Fun? – The Gendered Experience of American HC”
Pretty interesting stuff. Even though it was published last year, the word reached us first in 2010 and I immidiately called Rockmeier to get her to elaborate on her writings.
Featured track: Interview Siri Rockmeier
Fat Mike as Cokie the Clown @ South by South West-festival 20.03.10
The NoFX-frontman sent shockwaves into the entire punk-community and beyond after his now infamous serving of pee from a bottle (later revealed as a hoax) and very graphic stories from his past concerning rape, suicide, the killing of one of his parents and so on in between playing songs as Cokie the Clown at this years SxSW-festival. Before Fat Wreck Chords could removed all the videos from the show from YouTube, I recorded the sound and added it to the talk that I had with an old acquaintance of mine, Thomas Ryjord, and it became one of the highlights of the year.
Featured track: Interview Thomas Ryjord, attendee at Cokie the Clown @ SxSW 2010
Runners up:
BART @ Inside Fri 08.01
THE DOLLY ROCKER MOVEMENT – OUR DAYS MYND THE TIME (Bad Afro/VME)
HAYSEED DIXIE – KILLER GRASS (Cooking Vinyl/Tuba)
MONGO NINJA – NO CUNT FOR OLD MEN (Indie)
STATUS FATAL – IKKE FOR FOLK FLEST (Snotpope)

DEN STORE PUNKEFESTEN @ HULEN Sat April 17th
News:
After much contemplating and consideration Ive decided that this will be the final year for Aggresso! punkrock radio. Next spring it will be bye bye. I think I’ve accomplished most of the things that I wanted with this show and its always better to quit while you’re ahead, right? When Maiken joined the ranks 18 months ago, things picked up big time after being alone and going on auto-pilot for quite some time. And I dont wanna go there again. Also, there are other things in life than forcing yourself to listen to new music and making up an opinion on artists you dont really care either way about. Right? The show takes up alot of my time; writing playlist e-mails, asking for music, uploading the shows online every week, preparing for each show, writing, selecting songs etc etc. And even when Im on holiday (summer and X-Mas) its always there in the back of my head. But dont get me wrong; Im grateful for all the doors its opened for me. If it hadnt been for the show, my life probably wouldve been totally different. Its given me an outlet for joy, frustration, anger, love and everything between. Ive grown side by side with the shows development. Ive said and played some pretty stupid shit from time to time but Ive always been 100% honest about it. It has gotten me contacts all over the world I wouldnt wanna be without and it’s actually given me a sort of a name in the punk-scene, both nationally and internationally, and, combined with some other stuff, given me a name in a pretty wide scale here in Bergen. When people refer to me as “the chief of punk”, I take it as a compliment. I dont take it seriously but I take it for what it is.
Its kinda crazy sitting here writing these words. I dont wanna quit, really. Agresso!s my baby. But all good things must come to an end and Im sure the future will show that it was the right time. 10 years in the service of punkrock and hardcore should be enough. Maybe its time to start on my education and focus on other things. Ive come a long way since the beginning in 2001, both musically and personally. Next spring I’ll be 31 and 10 years older than many of the journalists in the radio. Most of them quit before they’re 25. I guess Im feeling kinda old yeah, but not in a bad way. Life haz grand as my ex-girlfriend wrote on her photoalbum. Not quite sure where Im going with this except that its time to take a new path in life. I am grateful for everyone who has participated in one way or the other in giving me this opportunity in life. Thank you all.
But there’s still one more year to go and I will make my strongest effort to see that it will be the best 10 months in Aggresso!-history! Hopefully I will create a decent website where you can listen to all the old shows (thats 10 years of radio), check the playlists and dig deeper into a small part of Norwegian punkrock-history.
Other than that, I have no idea when Maiken will be back but I will be live on air WEDNESDAY AUGUST 25th 13:00 (GMT+1). Hope you will tune in and enjoy the first show in Aggresso!s last year. Ive collected loadsa records from all over Europe this summer and I have a bunch of new ones sent to us during the last 2,5 months. Expect reports from my tour (in Norwegian) and the usual shit; Punknews, concert-info for the entire country, columns with various specialities and ticket-giveaways. See ya!
